One of the most exciting composers of his generation, Jonathan Cole was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize in 1999. Totem is a two movement, eight minute piece for solo oboe. The title refers to the passing of ideas from one register to another. The coda to the first part is a high lament and is surrounded by two scurrying (and somewhat scurrilous) dances.
