Seventeen classic transcriptions from one of the most important saxophonists to emerge in the 1950s. Primarily known for his work with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Desmond wrote the famous 'Take Five' which is included in this collection. Also includes 'Bossa Antiqua', 'Late Lament' and 'Take Ten'. Biography and selected discography.
The actual notes as played by Paul Desmond. But be aware that he played it differently on different occasions so don't assume you can donwload it on iTunes and instantly have the same performance. I never find this version to download as an MP3.
There are no piano accompaniments in this so a pianist will have to play by ear. We did 'Take Five' with a cor anglais instead of an alto sax which put the piano part a tone higher than written, into F minor. The same would be the case for a French Horn (although I can't imagine this on a French Horn - the cor can sound a bit like a sax xometimes). Alternatively the cor could transpose down a tone. Sounded very nice! Anonymous
