I have come across various starter books for instruments but this one seems to be the most simplified and clear. It deals with the usual things - the open strings and the basic and easiest notes (first position). The first exercise are not described using musical notation but with large typed letters for the notes. This will be helpful to a beginner as there is already so much to think about when picking up a viola or violin for the first time. The book is introductory from beginning to end, not getting away from the basic basics. For a complete novice including reading music this is pretty good.
