Felix Mendelssohn was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. He wrote symphonies, concerti, oratorios, Piano music and chamber music. Mendelssohn’s most famous solo Piano compositions are the Songs Without Words.

Songs Without Words is a series of short lyrical Piano pieces written between 1829 and 1845. Each of the eight volumes of consists of six "songs" (Lieder) written at various points throughout Mendelssohn's life, and thus published separately. The works were part of the Romantic tradition of writing short lyrical pieces for the Piano, although the specific concept of "song without words" was new.
