Jan Sweelinck (1562-1621) was among the most famous organists of seventeenth century Europe and an influential composer in the Dutch and North German tradition. As always, Dover manage to produce an affordable, readable edition of a composer’s complete works where other publishers fail! What effect this has on quality and accuracy, other scholars will better say, but for the amateur organist looking for an understanding (through playing) of the origins of the school that brought us the north German masters such as Buxtehude, Scheidemann, Lübeck and Reincken, this edition of the works of Sweelinck is hard to better. Works of every form, from the up-tempo toccatas through to the mournful (but powerfully moving) “Mein junges Leben hat ein End” will give the performer a broad pallette to choose from, which includes many examples of the important Cantus Firmus form for which the north German Baroque instrument was best suited.
