Oxford Choral Classics: English Church Music - Volume 1 (Anthems And Motets)

Books | SATB, Piano Accompaniment

Format: Sheet Music | Vocal Work
Oxford Choral Classics: English Church Music assembles in two volumes around 100 of the finest examples of English sacred choral music of the past five centuries.

The first volume, dedicated to anthems and motets, presents both favourite and lesser-known works, from the exceptional Renaissance polyphony of Taverner, Tallis, and Byrd, through the Restoration led by Purcell, to the glorious works of the great nineteenth- and twentieth-century composers, including Wesley, Elgar, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, and Howells.

The volume contains a number of more substantial works, including Mendelssohn's Hear my prayer, Stainer's I saw the Lord, and Naylor's Vox dicentis: Clama, as well as a wonderful selection of shorter pieces, from Gibbons's O Lord, in thy wrath to Walton's Set me as a seal upon thine heart. With the second companion volume of canticles and responses, this bipartite collection presents a comprehensive survey of English sacred music at its best.

This is a real wealth of British choral music. If you were to any 10 pieces that should feature in the repertoire of a good church choir, chances are that all of them would be in this collection. Therefore it represents excellent value for money. If you were starting a choir from scratch, this would be a fabulous investment, but how many existing choirs already have single copies of this music? The printing is clear, although the paper is a little thin, and the spacing of the staves can get a little wide when 8-part music is printed one stanza to a page.

Extremely good value and well edited. Some of the printing gets a little small, eg Gibbons O Clap your Hands making following your line more challenging than with a single copy. Also if you're buying a set of copies for a choir, the weight is considerable and issues of transportation should be considered. But anthems per pound? - a winning collection

A magnificent anthology of English Church Music. Every page turned brings up another old favourite. Great for those sing-along moments during broadcast choral services or as a single source book for the better SATB church choirs.Personally I look forward to acquiring subsequent volumes.

Over 50 anthems - all wonderful - many of my favourites. This anthology is very good value and good quality.
