Wesley set this prayer from the Litany several times and this edition is based on the final one published in 1870. The simple chordal texture of the opening blossoms into a richly contrapuntal Amen. The 'chains of our sins' are portrayed with characteristic chromaticism.
This delightfully simple Anthem shews Wesley eschewing his more operatic style ('Ascribe unto the Lord'; 'The Wilderness')in favour of something akin to the calm innerness of 'Cast me not away...' and 'Thou wilt keep him...'. It is almost all diatonic, with just one or two of those unexpected modulations so characteristic of the man. Our little Choir here will be singing it in Holy Week - if the Sops. can overcome their fear of a few top 'A's.
