          Musicroom Reviews

This is the perfect tutorial, covering so many different styles. Everything is expertly explained and well illustrated - while Greg Koch is always amusing, as well as being a great teacher. Having the tabs up on the screen is ideal - I suppose if there was one improvement that could be made it would be the ability to print the tabs from the screen.

Greg Koch's teaching methods seem to garner somewhat mixed reviews. Some find his light-hearted, humorous approach irritating, others entertaining. One thing that shouldn't be overlooked though is the man's great guitar playing, and in this DVD you'll see plenty of that whilst also picking up some pretty nifty licks along the way! Each featured guitarist is given two contrasting licks that show certain aspects of their style with a little advice on nuances (such as vibrato, picking style, etc.) that can make them sound even more authentic. He also recommends albums to listen to for good examples of each player's style, another nice touch. Notable players from various genres are covered making it a good all-round DVD whatever style you play, although some styles are covered better than others. The blues, country and rock licks are for the most part excellent, however the jazz and metal licks left a little to be desired in my opinion, hence 4 stars. No booklet is included and notation and TAB are shown on screen, but Greg walks though everything pretty slowly so you shouldn't have too much trouble keeping up. All in all, a good solid DVD for the intermediate to advanced guitarist.
