Alain Boublil/Claude-Michel Schonberg: Bethlehem (Martin Guerre)

Books | SATB, Piano Accompaniment

Publisher: Novello
Format: Sheet Music | Vocal Work

Bethlehem from Boublil and Schönberg’s 1996 musical Martin Guerre is a great addition to any Holiday repertoire this season. The lesser known historical musical, from the same creative team that produced Les Miserables and Miss Saigon, features similar vocal monumentality as its predecessors.

This piece is the best of both worlds, combining the grand sound of musical theatre with the festive atmosphere of carolling, and will be a welcome change to often overplayed and dusty Christmas programmes. In this edition Bethlehem is arranged for SATB (Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass) Voices with Piano accompaniment.

A beautiful arrangment of a beautiful piece of music.

this is a beautiful song and as a choir we are looking forward to perfecting it for a performance in December, we are a community choir of over 120 and I think it will be a real "goose bump" moment.

This does not present the traditional view of the little sleeping town stirring to the arrival of a new baby, but instead encaptures the arrival of hope. The quiet beginning phrases give way to a perpetual crescendo of acclaim, changing the soothing lullaby-like introduction into an rousing anthem for all those who see Bethlehem as the birthplace of faith.

A song which is immediately attractive and not too difficult to learn. This is a very welcome addition to my choir's Christmas repertoire.

Written for four-parts, but works well for two. Tuneful and satisfying to sing.
