        anecdotes about composers are well
presented and interesting. This seems to
be important as young people know so little about musical history today.

Good selection of music to extend repertoire as well as including a Grade 5 ABRSM piece. Also a lot of information about Classical period for background /GCSE knowledge. Well presented.

There are plenty of pieces in the book, a good mix of both well known and new with a very interesting overview on style included. A valuable stepping stone between approx. Grades 3-5.

I bought this unusual book ( produced in the States)as it contained one of the alternative A pieces for ABRSM piano Grade 4, Aria by W F Bach. I haven't read it from cover to cover but the book appears to display sound musicology, gives loads of information on devices such as sequence, style galant etc. The Classical Spirit could be a very dry topic and put people off, but it has lots of nice illustrations and is attractively produced. £9.99 seemed a bit expensive, but it does actually include a cd with helpful performances of all the pieces included, so I'd say it's a fair price.
