Maurice Ravel: Le Tombeau De Couperin

Books | Piano

Publisher: Alfred Publishing
Composer: Maurice Ravel
Format: Sheet Music | Instrumental Album
As a tribute to 18th Century French music, as well as to the memory of Francois Couperin, Ravel wrote this set of six piano pieces in the form of a suite, and dedicated each piece to a friend who had lost his life defending his country in World War One. Although Le Tombeau De Couperin retains the grace, clarity and elegance and charm reminiscent of the 18th Century, it's harmonies and colouristic effects are unmistakably of the 20th Century.

      Musicroom Reviews

You may think you are buying just a score here, but what you get is so much more. In fifty years of buying music, I've never seen a score with such a wealth of notes, attention to fingering (including suggested alternatives if the first doesn't suit you), evidence of painstaking research into the indications on the original score, fascinating information about each movement, its origins, structure, informed hints about playing, and so on. Particularly welcome is the excellent section on ornamentation - would that all scores offered such guidance in this connection ! In all, fifteen absorbing and genuinely useful pages before you even get to the score...which itself has copious and hugely practical footnotes to each page. If only other publishers would imitate this format, which they could easily do by asking themselves what the average pianist would be most likely to query, and then providing learned answers to those queries, as Alfred Publishing Co. do here. I shall be looking for the 'Alfred Masterwork Edition' first when buying other scores in the future, and thoroughly recommend.
