In this video, after opening with a sensational track from his new CD followed by more tracks throughout the video, Snake proceeds through one invaluable section after another explaining with clear demonstrations how he gets his unique sound and that seductive tone breathing techniques, tongue and other oral techniques, special effects, practice routines and more. Snake also waxes lyrical throughout the video with absolutely priceless advice on being a top session player, professionalism and overcoming nerves, absolute gems of wisdom that anyone wishing to make a career in the music business (or any business) would benefit from because Snake Davis is a consummate professional.
I had great hopes for this DVD knowing some of Snake Davis’s music and reputation, but was sadly disappointed. Snake comes across as a really nice guy but there is no real content here, he seems to tug random subjects without going into any depth, the material is a little lost as there is little here for the total beginner, or very much for the more advanced player, as the little gems that Snake imparts are common knowledge. On the plus side there are a couple of performance pieces that are very good, a nice solo Tenor piece and a rather sweet curved Soprano sax with a backing track. This video should have been titled “An Audience With Snake Davis”, and if you think of it along those terms and would like to see the man up-close this could well be worth buying, but sadly as a sax master class or tutorial it falls short.
