This volume takes into account the most recent research and is based on the first edition printed in 1799, and subsequent reprints published during Beethoven’s lifetime. The latter are of particular importance as secondary sources as neither the autograph nor any MS copies closely related to the autograph have survived. The restrained editorial practice of these early prints served as a model for the minimum of careful editorial intervention in these volumes. The layout is distinguished by its clarity, easy legibility and sensible page-turns, making this edition eminently suitable for practical performance.
The present volume, like all Wiener Urtext editions, also contains an informative preface filling in the historical background, detailed notes on interpretation and a critical commentary.
