For anybody who knows Lutoslawski's main body of work, these postludes from the early 1960s may come as a surprise - if not a shock. In his lifetime he tried to suppress them by disowning all but the first one, thinking that they had in some way failed to express what he hoped they would. Now, in my opinion, these pieces, although sounding a little tentative in their aim on occasion work admirably well, except for Number 2 which is, for me, an anomoly. The first and third are, however, fantastic pieces in their own right and, should be played more often than they are. Oliver Knussen gave the first UK performance of these pieces - but not until the 1980's!! They deserve more attention. However, at this price, and as a special order work, it may take a while before general conductors will take a chance on them.
