Cadence IV (1970) is a composition for prepared solo Piano by the American-Bulgarian composer Henri Lazarof. In addition to standard technique, it requires the pianist to use their hands to pluck and damp notes directly on the strings.
Henri Lazarof (1932-2013) was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, and studied in Israel, Europe, and America, where he settled in 1957. Fluent in 8 languages, he initially taught French language and literature at UCLA, before dedicating himself to composition. Fiercely independent of the usual composer’s associations, he was revered as a demanding but inspiring teacher who sought the limits of both the performer and the composer.
