Leon Kirchner’s highly original song cycle for Soprano Voice and Piano, The Twilight Stood consists of 6 songs based on 6 poems by Emily Dickinson: The Auctioneer, He Scanned It, The Cricket Sang, Partake as Doth the Bee, Much Madness and There Came a Wind. The cycle is 13 minutes of pure Kirchner – very chromatic, linear and frequently featuring irregular rhythms – creating a truly unique, haunting atmosphere. Intended for advanced (Grade 8+) soloists, this piece is extremely challenging but rewarding at the same time.
Leon Kirchner was an American composer of contemporary classical music. Kirchner's musical style is generally linear, chromatic, rhapsodic and rhythmically irregular; it is influenced by Schoenberg but does not employ the twelve-tone technique.
