Follows the usual 'complete player' format of practising new steps with appropriate songs. Fingering for the notes is illustrated with small but adequate photos. Because the clarinet can play a wide range of notes, this book only covers part of the range (but enough for a good set of tunes), with the rest covered in the other volumes. The book concentrates on playing, so doesn't cover instrument choice or maintenance - but does tell you how to assemble the instrument.

This is a great book for complete beginners (like me). I liked it for its choice of songs which are all in the chalumeau (bottom) register of the clarinet. The songs are simple and the keys are easy. I was thrilled when I managed to play Strangers in the Night and my family recognised it! I have mostly used the book A New Tune a Day for the Clarinet as my textbook as it comes with a CD and seemed to have a better system for teaching but as a book of beginner tunes The Complete Clarinet Player can't be beaten and I always turn to it when I've finished practising and want some fun.
