Robert Helps (1928-2001) was an American pianist and composer. A virtuoso performer in the style of Abby Whiteside, he also taught at Universities and Conservatories across the United States.
In Retrospect was composed in 1977. Originally intended to be a work for children, it ballooned into something much greater, but retained a nostalgic childhood inspiration as the title would suggest. Based in and around the key of E minor, it subtly incorporates themes from Ravel and other composers who influenced Helps. The five movements are Prelude, Dance, Song, Pastorale, Toccata.
