Worth buying for the Dalmatian Cradle Song & "The Owls" alone !

Carol Barratt's accompaniment to "Allan Water" & "Ash Grove" are interesting and definitely 'grow on you'; they are independent of the
vocal line and sometimes pitched higher than it -- good experience for the singing student.

          Editor's background notes useful for
          explaining Betty Roe's songs.
Some English translations could be updated, e.g. Taubert's Lullaby.

No original text supplied for the Sicilian River Song.

Good selection of songs. Useful CD.
Not so keen on some of the folk songs from other countries, although I understand why they're there.

          A useful resource.

Obviously, this series of AB publications is a "must" for anyone preparing for a Grade 1-5 singing exam......this is a good selection of songs, covering a wide variety of styles. However, as a teacher I have 2 problems with all the books in the series. 1)Why does the book not tell you to which list - A,B or C - each song belongs? And 2) The piano accompaniments on the CDs accompanying the songs are actually quite hard to sing along to, even for an experienced musician, and they're only of use if the key suits the singer. Some of the keys chosen are likely to be problematic in some cases.

A good repertoire guide with very good language support. A lot of the songs are covered in other publications but it is convenient to have the Grade 3 songs in one book. I have never been an advocate of songs in exotic languages as a lot of singers cannot even sing in English so would not use Chinese etc for Grade 3 standard singers.

It would help if the songs were arranged in lists A, B,and C. Personally I don't think the pronunciation guide is needed for English songs - having an alternative key could be useful (especially if you are teaching broken /breaking voices). Too many traditional songs (12) compared with Art Songs (20). Easy-to-read music and helpful information about each song.

A little expensive but lots of song to choose from.

Really good book, if a little expensive. However, having the CD is very useful for practice purposes.

These song books are full of a wide range of songs and the CD promises good support but doesn't quite deliver. It only provides the piano accompaniment and a second track with the words being said to help with pronunciation. The missing element, for me, is the song being sung, so that students can hear what it should sound like. ABRSM provide this for instrumental CDs, but fail to provide it here. I think they missed a trick!
