John Tavener: Five Anthems From The Veil Of The Temple

Books | SATB, Organ Accompaniment

Publisher: Chester Music
Composer: John Tavener
Format: Sheet Music | Vocal Work

The Veil of the Temple is a journey from darkness into light.

Care and attention has been given to the key chosen for each anthem and to the voicings, so that these versions are attractive to the broadest possible range of amateur as well as professional singers.

The breathtakingly simple Mother Of God, here I stand and the quietly ecstatic Awed by the Beauty are for unaccompanied chorus. The remaining three anthems are scored with Organ accompaniment: the sonorous You mantle yourself in light; the contemplative What God is we do not know and the radiant O Mary Theotokos.

        Musicroom Reviews

This is some of the best choral music from Sir John Tavener. Mother of God, here I stand is on the same level as The Lamb. Simple and very effective. Every choir should try these anthems.

In terms of quality of music, this is among Tavener's best. Taken from a his all night vigil 'The Veil of the Temple', these extracted anthems last around 16 minutes in total. What is slightly misleading is that some anthems are SATB, whilst some have multiple divisi. sections. However, this should not put people off, as with some slight adjusting, smaller choirs would be able to sing these magnificent pieces.
