      Musicroom Reviews

I've heard lots about this book over the years but I hadn't realised just how much of the standard community music activities come from it. I was really excited about receiving it as so many people had recommended it and it has definitely lived up to expectations. It's well laid out with each piece over one or two pages, listed in numbered stages with diagrams, illustrations and warnings of things to look out for that might go wrong. It's excellently written: Some of the activities and concepts are quite complex, but they're explained clearly. It's also wide-ranging and the activities cover concepts from pulse to micro-tones. There should be something for every type of music workshop for all ages and ability levels.

A very good book with some good ideas which can be used to encourage improvisation. Although it is intended for group workshops, the exercises can easily be adapted for one to one tuition.

"Search and reflect" est un ouvrage de référence, rien de moins. Il permet de guider l'exploration de son propre langage que l'on entreprend lorsque l'on pratique l'improvisation. L'accent est mit sur la pratique collective et les exercices sont accessibles, et intéressants, aussi bien pour des musiciens débutants qu'expériementés. Ils constituent un véritable défi, même pour ces derniers et une invitation à toujours chercher et réfléchir.

This book is fantastic for anyone running classes or workshops that look at improvisation and particularly 'free' improv. It mixes simple group exercises for developing fundamental music (mostly rhythm) skills with more abstract approaches to playing. The book does not provide whole lesson plans, but it is full of excellent activities that the teacher can use in different ways. It can be used for warm up or 'loosening' exercises before playing more conventional jazz or as a road map for experimental/conceptual music creation.

Great to have this historic and valuable book available again. An excellent printing. Highly recommended.
