Abracadabra Violin - Beginner

Books and CDs | Violin

Publisher: A & C Black
Author: Katie Wearing
Series: Abracadabra
Format: Books | Instrumental Tutor
This pupil's book provides a lively and comprehensive introduction to the very first steps of playing the violin.

All the titles in the Abracadabra series work in conjunction with each other, making them ideal for ensemble, group and whole class tuition. Used alone they remain perfect for individual lessons.

The book contains activities, games and pieces that teach the fundamentals of playing the violin : good posture (with and without the instrument), bow hold, finger position and pitch awareness as well as developing rhythm and notation reading. The CD also aids pitch development with performances of the pieces and backing tracks to motivate pupils to practise pieces and activities outside of their lessons. The basics are constantly reinforced and revisited with the pupils building up to 'performance pieces' that combine and showcase all of the skills they have developed.

Great for the younger beginner and groups: fun activities and pizzicato to backing tracks give an easy and enjoyable start.
There is a a sudden jump in difficulty once fingers are introduced.

        Great starter book.
Perhaps not the best for self-teaching.

Good exercises and songs to prepare children for playing the violin, other books don't have these preparatory activities.

All the kids I teach love this starter book. It includes very helpful warm ups to free up the body and learn how to stand, and hold the violin and bow. The pieces are fun, have words to sing along to, good quality and interesting backing tracks, and no traditional notation till later in the book. For children aged 10 upwards the original Abracadabra book I feel is fine for beginners, but this book it excellent for younger beginners.

A nice, gentle introduction to violin playing for little pupils. Possibly a bit basic for the older child, but the small size and easy pace makes it approachable for younger beginners.

A brilliant book with a great CD to use at school or at home. Introduces notation midway through, perfect for infant beginners or wider opportunities sessions.
