Franz Schubert: String Quintet In C (Henle Urtext Edition) - Parts

Books | String Quintet

Publisher: Henle Verlag
Composer: Franz Schubert
Format: Sheet Music | Parts
Opus post. 163 D 956. Parts only.

No music lover can remain untouched by the emotional quality of this work, composed in Schubert's last year. The monumental weight of the outer movements, the intimate lyricism of the "Adagio", as well as the unusual timbre ensure the uniqueness of this quintet. An additional cello, which takes on an essential melodic role, joins the classical string quartet. The editor of this Urtext edition, Egon Voss, not only does justice to the difficult source situation; with new and convincing solutions for difficult page turns, he also takes into account the demands of musical practice.

Special folding pages - sometimes Schubert doesn't give you any opportunity in which to turn a page!
This is real urtext, with every bar scrutinised as to its original source and articulation.
      Very clear printing and spacing.
Despite the supposed meticulous attention to detail, we have already found two serious misprints in the second violin part. One of them seems to be that bar 213 (first movement) has been repeated instead of the true bar 214! We haven't checked the the other three movements yet. Don't they have proof readers at Henle Edition?
The trouble with an urtext edition like this is that it is nowhere near ready to perform. I will have to go through it thinking of the best bowings and fingerings and put them in. This is where we need an edition with suggestions from some great string players... This was the only edition available to me.

Nice clean edition, well set up for page turns, etc.
If you're used to Peters Editions with suggested bowings and fingerings, you'll miss them in this edition.

Good, clear edition, often with the 3 pages on view to save page turns. There is a detailed commentary at the end of the first violin part for those interested in a truly authentic performance.

Very pleased with this edition and quick delivery, in time for the string workshop I attended at the end of the week.
