      Musicroom Reviews

As Brian Priestley observes in his excellent liner notes, many people had a tendency to downgrade Teddy Wilson’s importance as a jazz artist because of one thing, of which Wilson himself was completely innocent: legions of cocktail piano players absorbed aspects of his style, thus superficially sounding like him, and vice versa. But make no mistake: this is the real thing, no matter whether it is the (little known) 1939 transcriptions, Wilson as a band pianist in the 1944 sextet recordings featuring the strong (but today largely forgotten) voices of Emmett Berry and Benny Morton, or the Copenhagen trio recordings of 1968 and 1980. In particular, the two latter sessions (12 of the CD’s 22 titles) offer piano playing that mixes an almost dignified elegance with a mature vitality.
