Complete Anglican Hymns Old And New

Books | Piano Accompaniment

Publisher: Kevin Mayhew Ltd.
Format: Sheet Music | Vocal Work
In recent years, Hymns Old & New has outsold all other hymnbooks for the Anglican Church, and so established itself as the leading hymnal. With the continuing rich outpouring of new hymns and songs, a hymn book which justly claims to have the most exhaustive and all-embracing collection must inevitably keep pace – to embrace the best new material and include even more treasures from the past. The need of the Church to renew material for our celebrations is a healthy one, because it is a sign of the Church’s vitality.

This latest edition – Complete New Anglican Hymns Old & New is entirely revised and reset, and foreshadows the development of liturgy in the years to come. Among a total of nearly 1,000 pieces you will find hymns and songs, a selection of liturgical settings for the Eucharist, chants, and material suitable for use with children. Naturally, there is also a full set of biblical, liturgical and musical indices.

Complete Anglican Hymns Old & New is beautifully produced – a clear typeface, excellent printing and strong binding. In this new edition, the music has been set in a slightly larger page format, and bound in such a way that it falls open beautifully in the hand, or to set on the organ/piano music stand.

        Musicroom Reviews

This hymnal has plenty of pleasant surprises, including some very modern music. The children's section is brilliant, and just what they love singing. The only minor downside is that the hymn numbers do not correspond to the hymnals used in church, so I have to translate them every time.

It's a great book and full of good stuff. Some of the harmonies are a little strange and I am aware of protests about Onward Christian Pilgrims (which I look on as a different hymn from Onward Christian Soldiers). But the really weak link is the alphabetical ordering system which fails to take into account separate words. My database orders the hymns differently; example: A Man there lived in Galilee should be No. 3, but is actually 28; Abba, Father should be 7 but is 1. Also beware purchasing old second hand copies as there were some awful printing errors; I recall one hymn where the second half was extracted from a different hymn! By 2003 (my copy) that had been corrected, but there were still some errors in the indexes.
