James Rae: Jazz Scale Studies (Saxophone)

Books | Saxophone

Catalogue No: UE21353
Composer: James Rae
Format: Sheet Music | Instrumental Album
18 studies written to develop familiarity with the main types of scales and arpeggios in Jazz. More enjoyable than the scales themselves, James Rae has deliberately chosen keys that give a comfortable, user-friendly introduction to the various tonalities. Each section describes a particular type of scale and includes studies based on it. Included are: the major scale, the dorian mode, the mixolydian mode, the minor pentatonic scale, the jazz melodic minor scale, the blues scale, the chromatic scale, the whole tone scale and the diminished scale.
Studies in each of these volumes have been set as an alternative to scales, for all grades, on the Jazz Flute, Jazz Clarinet and Jazz Saxophone syllabuses of the new Trinity Guildhall Examinations 2007.

Included are music pieces that allow the player to practice each scale in a musical way, instead of just repeating the same notes up and down the scale.

A great starting point for players just getting into jazz and improvisation with 9 scales to learn, which are in well chosen keys for comfort.
Not a bad point just a suggestion:

Although scale usage when improvising are very personal and creative to each player, the book could have delved a little further into each scales' harmonic application.

One of the books required for the Jazz Sax exams. Makes scales etc much more interesting for the player, and much more interesting for the listener!

This is being used by my 12 year old son who has been learning to play the sax for just over a year at school - recommended by his teacher and he seems to be using it with ease and the presentation is clear. Would have like the CD to have been included - we had to buy one separately - having said that we got it online, used, for a couple of quid.

I use this for the technical exercises in the Trinity Guildhall Jazz exams but the studies actually are very good for helping my improvisation students. Some of the studies are quite fun to play.
