Score and Parts
'Daily life and the little dramas constantly enacted in it' are the subject for this ambitious clarinet quartet. Indeed, the hurrying first movement, 'Moving On', seems to sum up the quality of most people's quotidian experience! But then comes 'Waving', inspired by Stevie Smith's portentous poem 'Not Waving but Drowning', imbuing the unfolding musical narrative with more complex feelings. After the cheerful equilibrium of the third movement, 'Strolling', they combine with the opening music of unrelenting haste to encompass an extended, frantic climax before the music falters to an enigmatic end. Ensemble music for adventurous players of advanced standard, Every Day Dancing is a welcome addition to the repertoire of music for multiple clarinets, and will be welcomed at summer schools and conservatoires.
