A. C. Piatti: Method For Cello - Book 1

Books | Cello

Publisher: Stainer & Bell
Format: Books | Instrumental Tutor

The first part of the comprehensive and renowned Method For Cello by nineteenth century composer, educator and celebrated cellist Alfredo Piatti. An extremely popular tutor, Piatti takes the student through the early stages of playing technique – such as the open strings, first position and bowings – up to exercises in the fifth, sixth and seventh positions (in the Tenor Clef). Arpeggios and scales are also included throughout to train the hands, fingers and wrists, in order for the right technique to become ingrained. Whenever a new concept or technique is introduced Piatti provides a detailed explanation of it, so that no prior Cello experience is required. However, a basic knowledge of music theory is assumed, the student is expected to be familiar with the notes of the bass clef, note lengths, key and time signatures etc.

It allows you to progress to a good level at the end of the book. It has a lot of exercises to help with sight-reading and of a good difficultly progression yet requires previous music and theory knowledge.
Unfortunately it doesn't contain any diagrams like for the finger positions. Also it doesn't include any well known tunes which can sometimes help you progress.

As an adult beginner of the cello, but an experienced musician, it is a bit more meaty than some of the more child-friendly books I've been using up until now.
A few diagrams wouldn't go amiss!

          Musicroom Reviews

I love this tutor book and have used it in lessons with both adults and children for years. The studies are more like duet pieces - great for groups or teacher/pupil together, and most of them are really lovely to play. Graduation of difficulty is in keys, and you can always find one that concentrates on a particular style of bowing.
