I didn't expect to find this little known work here, but, having found it, I was impressed with the clarity of the printing, far superior to the old Novello's edition available in libraries. The score is larger, well spaced-out, and clear to read (Bach can be a devil of a read in a cramped page e'g' old edition)

This is a delightful work within the capacity of a competent church choir. It may be used in its entirety during a service or as half of a concert, or parts of it may be used with spoken devotional material during Passiontide. Although scored for strings and oboes, it can be performed by strings alone, or on organ, piano or harpsichord. The chorus parts give the choir to play characters such as the pompous high priest, mocking crowd and soldiers, in addition to the short devotional chorales. There are only two real solos, both of which can be sung by a tenor or soprano. Both are within the capacity of a competent singer prepared to practise.
