Austrian-born composer (1757-1831) Ignaz Pleyel was regarded as a famous composer of the time, having benefited from studying with Haydn and Beethoven, however many of his works remain obscure in today’s performance repertoire. Pleyel does, however, continue to be known today as a composer of didactic music: generations of beginning violin and flute students, for example, learn to play the numerous duets he wrote for those instruments.

Available here as part of the Collection Litolff are Pleyel’s set of three duets, theTrois Grands Duos Op.69, for Violin and Viola.

          Musicroom Reviews

My violin friend found these after we learned the Mozart duo K423 and it is similar though of course not Mozart. She played them as sight reading practice with her teacher when she was working for her Grade 8 exam, but anyone from grade 5 up could try them. It's not too high and there is some double stopping but it's manageable. You'd have to ask my friend about the violin part but to me it seems the parts are quite even. The paper is dirty cream with good black print and the covers have pretty, old fashioned engravings with laurels urns and instruments, so it looks like something you picked up in a 2nd hand shop or your grannie's piano stool - but it's in good as new condition. Strangely the staples are very rusty which has stained the paper but it's robust and otherwise clean and readable. I'm looking forward to many happy hours with one friend at a time.
