Plaisir D'Amour: Songs Of Love

Books | Piano, Voice, Guitar Chord Symbols

Publisher: Faber Music
Format: Sheet Music | Songbook
Plaisir D'Amour features 16 fun-loving French love songs arranged for Piano and Voice, with Guitar chord symbols, too. These classic love songs come from the land of the Paris, with every song written in that most romantic of languages.

Some of the songs within this book are renowned as some of the greatest ever written, in any language, due to their beautiful melodies and heartfelt lyrics. There is, after all, a reason it's called a Romantic language! Tunes like Hymne A L'Amour, La Vie En Rose and Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien all suggesting why Édith Piaf is remembered so fondly for her emotionally resonant singing. Other songs include Ne Me Quitte Pas, Les Parapluies De Cherbourg and Chanson D'Amour, going to show how well the beauty of the French language translates into song.

French as a language is inherently musical, the rising and falling syllables roll off the tongue like a poetic melody. Another legacy that these love songs draw from is the beautiful French poetry that has been written. The likes of Baudelaire, Rimbaud and Verlaine all contributed to the composition of music that has, at its very heart, love and lust. The incredible music, lyrics and singing of these love songs have kept them firmly in the hearts and minds of listeners for generations. Now, with this song book of French love songs, you can learn the most enduring and most beautiful of those tunes, for the Piano, Voice and Guitar.

If you want to go the extra mile this Valentine's Day, dispensing with all of those dull English-language tunes, pick up Plaisir D'Amour, this unique book of French Songs Of Love, and serenade your beau with la beauté de la chanson!

I first heard one of the pices in this book "Les plaisirs demodes" as a dance band arrangement called the "Dance the old-fashioned way", and was surprised it was quite recent (1970s) and a Charles Aznavour hit. If you love this sort of stuff, Piaf, Michel Legrand, and all the classic French chansons of the 20th century you'll love this. Arranged for intermediate grade pianists, both vocal line and piano parts mostly get to share the melodies.
Note that the English lyrics generally have nothing whatsoever to do with the French texts - they're not translations, just completely different.
May not matter that much, I guess most people will still prefer the sounds of the French lyrics.

There are lovely tunes...! It would be nicer to have second/third verses as well somewhere in the book, possibly close to the sheet of music.
