Piano Adventures - Gold Star Performance - Primer Level

The Piano Adventures®: Gold Star Performance – Primer Level is an adventurous collection for the elementary pianist featuring changing moods, keys, and hand positions. The series offers performance pieces ‘with a challenge.’ This collection may also be used as a graduation book to improve artistic, technical, and rhythmic skills before advancing to the next level.

As the title Gold Star suggests, these pieces are especially appropriate for recitals and other musical events. A broad range of styles are presented to enhance the young musician’s awareness of classical, jazz, folk, and impressionistic sounds. Pieces need not necessarily be taught in the order presented.

The Gold Star Performance CD is a discovery in sound for both listening and play-along. Repeated listening, with and without the score, will familiarize students with diverse musical textures and sonorities – a lively marching band, the bass sounds of roaming pterodactyls, or ringing French cathedral bells.

The educational recordings provide more than student demonstration – they provide settings in harmony, style, and rhythm which explore the expressive and dramatic qualities of the piano. Solo piano performances, superlatively performed by Randall and Nancy Faber, are included at the end of the CD.

Gold Star characteristics of each piece are listed in the table of contents and a Gold Star music dictionary and certificate conclude the book.

I've found this to be a very useful and popular book with elementary students. It works well for students who have completed the Primer level lesson book or nearly done so. It gives them lots of fun pieces to reinforce this work often with minimal help from the teacher. The CD is good too and all excellent value.
CD is quite American but it's not a problem with this generation.

The songs in this book are really fun. PA primer students can start to tackle some of these once they've reached about Unit 8 in the lessons book. They are challenging and longer than the pupil will be used to (some are over 30 bars long), so would be wasted on a pupil who doesn't put much practice in. Since book 1 starts with the tricky area of legato, I found it useful to use the gold star pieces to work on legato for a bit longer before moving on in the lesson book to staccato. So while the book is by no means essential for pupils on the PA course, it can be useful and children will find a lot to enjoy in it.

Nice book, but the Lesson book and the basic Performance book do such a good job and have such a wealth of material in them that I feel the Gold Star books are unnecessary.
