A comprehensive guide to playing the drums, featuring all the important beats, rhythms, fills, rudiments, techniques and concepts required by today's versatile performing drummer. This book presumes no previous musical knowledge and clearly and carefully familiarises its reader with the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge required. Basic information such as explanation of notation, equipment, holding the drumsticks and practice suggestions are covered at the early stages and is vital for people with no previous knowledge of drums.
The book is then split into three carefully graded sections, each covering fundamental topics that include theory and sight-reading exercises, stick control and beats, fills and solos. a broad range os styles is covered which includes rock, heavy metal, funk, reggae, jazz, rap, hip-hop, blues and old-time. The accompanying CD contains all of the examples covered within the book.
This book is great! It goes from the very basics in how to set up your kit, how to hold your sticks, rudiments such as flams & paradiddles, through to snare and bass drum variations. It even has a few Latin rhythms, drum fills, and ends on several pieces of music for you to attempt. It comes with the usual cheesy CD music to practice along with. It was recommended by my first drum teacher and it served me well in the early years. Great all round book for beginners and beyond, and note size is easy to read. Anonymous
