Neil Mackay: Position Changing For Violin

Books | Violin

Author: Neil Mackay
Format: Books | Instrumental Tutor

These exercises are suitable for class or individual use. The position changes in the book are from 1st to 3rd and vice versa and are designed so that students may learn the correct method of shifting from one position to another.
When the various finger changes have been mastered the same technique may be applied to all other position changes in which the left hand moves up or down the neck of the violin. The melodies are edited in order that pupils may improve their musicianship by observing tempi, expression marks, and phrasing. Phrases are punctuated by means of commas or rests.

I've been using this book for years. I even used it when I was learning! It is still the best tutor for position changing from 1st to 3rd position. The exercises are beautiful miniatures which young pupils love playing. The accompaniments (separate book) have lovely harmonies too.

Absolutely invaluable once you reach about grade 3 level. Gradually builds up your shifting technique, and the tunes are quite catchy too. Highly recommended.

My violin teacher urged me to buy this book and so far I have been impressed with the techniques shown. It is written in an easy to understand way and there are pieces of music designed to help you practice your new skills. I am a mature student and have come back to having lessons after a 20 year break. I find the book easy to use with guidance from the teacher.
