The Fife was an enormously popular instrument in the USA during the period from the 1750s until shortly after the end of the Civil War and, because of their prominent use during this period, they have become recognised as a symbol of national heritage.

The Fife is very much a cross between a recorder and a flute, in that, like a flute, you blow across the mouth hole to produce the sound, but, like a recorder, you cover the open holes with your fingers to achieve the different pitches. Still used in some military bands, the Fife is a wonderful instrument, and serves as an excellent starting point to learning the beginnings of good flute technique.

This quality Yamaha Fife produces an excellent tone and is beige in colour. A fingering chart is also included.

A lovely instrument for children to try before playing a flute. All for a few pounds. Nicely made too, in two sections with a bag.

It's a great way to introduce the flute without the expensive of buying or hiring a more expensive instrument.
The sound is a little shrill and not as refined as the recorder or flute would sound.

Great, arrived promptly and my daughter is already getting a sound from it (though not a great one yet).

As a flute teacher I am introducing younger children to playing the Fife in preparation for flute lessons once they are a little bigger. The Fife is easy to hold and very robust, compared to a flute. The Fife uses much the same embouchure as the flute and I have found it ideal for introducing woodwind to years 1-3.

Best around to get young students started. Easy to produce sound and fingering transferable to flute.

A great instrument for young budding flautists to try before parents commit to buying a flute. Sound is OK, and having to cover the holes perfectly breeds good hand position. Most fingerings are the same as the flute with a notable exception being F#, which has to be half holed. But overall a great product.
