Paul Hindemith: Trumpet Sonata

Books | Trumpet, Piano Accompaniment

Publisher: Schott Music
Composer: Paul Hindemith
Format: Sheet Music | Instrumental Album

This is a tricky but rewarding Trumpet Sonata by German composer Paul Hindemith. He was a distinguished viola player and an important composer during the first half of the 20th century. With leaps and very deliberate textured melody, this is a dramatic and sombre work exemplifying Hindemith’s skill and instrumental sensitivity.

The solo trumpet part is also included on a separate insert.

It's so difficult to play. I think the second movement is the easiest. Not a piece for those with mouthpiece pressure problems!! The piano part is worse. It doesn't matter if you can play it, because you need a fantastic pianist to accompany you. The two parts are actually in different key signatures for some of one movement - utterly bizarre!! It's a good piece though and part of the grade 8 syllabus for most boards. Triple tonguing (possibly) and very good endurance with quite good upper register needed (goes up to a B just above the stave, so not absolutely awful!).

Be under no illusions ladies and gents this piece is HARD! It's bad enough just to get through it but then there is all the deep, sorrowful meaning Hindemith conveys, which requires a deep understanding of the time Hindemith was writing and, some say, a fair bit of life experience of your own. Not a piece to be taken lightly and this is not a bog-standard, run-of-the-mill sonata. This is a test for any player, on a par with the Haydn for the skills you will need to play it well, but worth a look for anyone!
