        Musicroom Reviews

I was also at the premiere of this work, being involved in the Festival's backroom. Ever since, I have hoped to hear it again given by the dedicatee and his (up-dated) Singers who were appearing in their first public performance on that date in July 1978. The composer in his programme note spoke of the weather on his frequent visits to Fishguard had "always been beautiful" and "may have subconciously affected my choice" of subject matter. If lovers of poetry can find the extracts I recommend reading them as they so aptly underline McCabe's exquisite choice, graced by his music. This work for chamber choir and orchestra was written for John S. Davies and his Singers and premiered at the Fishguard International Music Festival in 1978. It is set to poems by Tennyson, H.D. (Hilda Doolittle), Longfellow, Walter de la Mare and John Keats. The composer said it was his hope that "it may convey something of the evanescent quietude of a summer night". To one who was there, it certainly did.
