- This carol is a working of the traditional French melody "Quittez Pasteurs" by Kenneth Leighton, my benevolent old harmony and counterpoint professor from Edinburgh University. The writing is typically motivic and contrapuntal with rhythmic impetus and at the same time beautifully lyrical with sensitive choral writing (SATB with a little division of sopranos, so you need at least five singers, SSATB for a small scale performance). It needs a competent organist(though doesn't require FRCO standard.) Leighton was a good craftsman and really practical musician. I love this piece.
