Reynaldo Hahn: Mélodies Vol.2 (Medium Voice/Piano)

Books | Voice, Piano Accompaniment

Publisher: Heugel
Composer: Reynaldo Hahn
Format: Sheet Music | Vocal Work

As Proust liked to remind us, Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947) had a clear voice that was really appreciated in Paris at the time: he believed Hahn’s mouth was a genius music instrument that was letting the most beautiful, sad yet warm voice out when he was singing.

Following the first volume written in 1986, Melodies Volume 2 comprises twenty exciting songs for Voice with Piano Accompaniment, composed by Reynaldo Hahn.

These twenty melodies are: Quand la nuit n'est pas étoilée – Cantique - La Délaissée - La chère blessure – Théone - Le souvenir d'voir Cante -Quand je fus pris au pavillon - Chanson au bord de la fontaine - Sur l'eau – Fumée - Le printemps - Dans la nuit - Les fontaines - A Chloris - Le rossignol des lilas - A nos morts ignorés - Ma jeunesse - Le plus beau présent - Puisque j'ai mis ma lèvre - La douce paix

          Musicroom Reviews

The melodies are beautiful, especially 'A Chloris' and the piano part is very easy to play (I'm grade 8). The downside is the price, very steep at £37.95. The book is also not robust enough for everyday use and attempting to get the pages to stay open without breaking the spine is ner on impossible.

These songs don't go up very high (though there are a couple of top A flats) or down very low (below middle C). I found the piano accompaniments pretty accessible with a little practice - I am a very rusty player. And the songs are lovely enough to motivate practising! No problems at all with delivery. Drawbacks? The price - £37.95 is pretty steep. And the binding - I know it's not unusual for music to come in this paper-covered "springback" style that challenges the reader to keep the book open at the appropriate page for more than two seconds. But I still object to it. And for the price it would have been nice to get something that stays open on its own.
