This piece is equally suited for singing on the day of celebration of St. John the Baptist, or as an Advent anthem.
Written for alto solo verse (countertenor), the main body of the piece is for SAATB. The soloist undoubtedly needs to be a competent singer, as does the main body of voices in all parts because this a piece which if not sung properly, or accompanied sensitively on the organ, will fall apart very early and will be lost.
I have had the privilege of singing the solo part in this anthem on three occasions and I am now looking forward to introducing this work to my own choir.
There are many good pieces that have been written for alto solo but this in my opinion is at the top of the pile.
"This is the Record of John" is Orlando Gibbons at his very best. Anonymous
