Songs and Vocal Ensemble music edited under the supervision of the Purcell Society by Anthony Lewis and Nigel Fortune. Includes solo songs, vocal duets, songs for three or more voices, and two songs attributed to Purcell, but of uncertain authorship.
This is a wonderful collection of mostly solo songs mainly in keys suitable for higher voices. The texts are generally rather melancholy, but very beautiful, and superbly set. Particular gems are "Lord, what is man?" and "In the black, dismal dungeon of despair." These I have not found in other anthologies, but I recommend buying this book for those alone. Anonymous
