Ernest Bloch: Suite Hebraique (Viola Or Violin And Piano)

Books | Violin, Viola, Piano Accompaniment

Publisher: G. Schirmer
Composer: Ernest Bloch
Format: Sheet Music | Score and Parts

The Suite hébraïque draws on traditional Jewish sources, such as the sound of the shofar's call, as Bloch explored his Judaic heritage. The first movement is forceful, with barely repressed emotion. A march rhythm and a passionate theme from the viola characterize the second movement, titled Processional. The finale, Affirmation, opens and closes with a full-throated theme over a dance-like, lilting rhythm, framing a sweet, graceful central section. Includes parts for Viola and Violin.

I bought this because I am preparing for the grade 8 viola exam and if I don't play Fiddle Faddle by Leroy Anderson I may choose the 3rd movement in this suite. It has a big sound with grand detache bowing which my teacher would like me to practise because he just gave me Kreisler Praeludium and allegro to learn and I think this is similarly big and fat in sound. It has a paper cover which may not prove very robust considering I will need a long time to get to grips with it.
