This is a fascinating study of a very specific area of interest. Patrick Turner explores with admirable clarity and with well sourced authenticity the several proposed origins of Elgar's so-called "Enigma" Variations and puts forward a convincing case for his own suggestion of "the theme behind the theme". As he himself says, without the possibility of confirmation this side of the grave,no-one will ever know the truth of the matter. But this is an eminently readable set of surmises, researched with sufficient rigour to retain credibility. For anyone interested in such musico/historic detective work, Turner's short book is a good buy.
