          Musicroom Reviews

I am by no standard a Bach expert, but I have used several different editions of Bach's works for lute and other instruments, transcribed for guitar. I must say this is a very readable one, with detailed fingering, suggested ornaments interpretations and performance notes. The fingering is usually sensible. On comparing this edition with the other ones I found quite a few discrepancies. Willard says his is based on the Bach-Gesselschaft edition. Since I do not have it available, I cannot judge how far this statement is true; after some comparison with other editions I have on hand I can only say Willard's usually has more consistent voicings (eg. no missed rests) and less simplifications (eg. including every chord note, even if the fingering for guitar looks quite difficult). The only qualm I have about this edition is page breaks: eg. on page 11 Bouree starts at just two lines before the end of the page; what is worse, just one more measure would be enough to finish the phrase on this page, it is, however, left orphaned on page 12. Although a bit irritating, this is probably not a major problem, so I could recommend this sheet music to anyone but die-hard sightreaders.

Very good transcriptions of bach flute work. I am satisfied I changed some of the finger positions like bass lines at prelude bmw999 wich are now more suitable for me, but it was a personal option. I will try to work all this book which is fantastic.

Cannot judge this against other editions, hence only 4 stars. It is clearly laid out and the fingering is helpful and logical. As the reviewer above has already said, page breaks are a little irritating. Other than that, a thumbs up
