This is a beautiful setting of a plaintive Essex folksong, the part writing is interesting throughout, the range of voices used shows how RVW really knew men's voices. At a time when Male Choirs are being drawn ever more into simple arrangements of sixties pop songs and the like, please please have a look at this one for your choir, the rewards make the effort very worthwhile.

Ralph Vaughan Williams shows again how masterfully he composes for voice. This is a moving and rich arrangement, yet quite easy to sing and this Essex folksong will warm your audiences' hearts. Anonymous
