The Three Equali for four trombones is a superb set of pieces. The mood of each equali is quite similar, and sombre in style. The quartet demands good tonality and good intonation because of the close, chorale-like harmony which Beethoven adopts. Pieces known as Equali originated in Austria in the 18th century, and were short movements, usually for trombone quartet. These particular Equali by Beethoven were composed in 1812, and were played at Beethoven's own funeral. They are superb pieces for performance at any solemn occasion.
