          Musicroom Reviews

A very beautiful contemporary piece for solo cello which allows the soloist to explore a variety of technique and range. Some of the timbres seemed fairly arbitrary at first (foot stamping for example) until you realise the connection with the songs that the work is based on. It's a work to keep returning to; every time I do I unlock a little bit more of the Judith Weir sound and a little bit more of the American folksong sound.

I am a regular new music performer and have had the pleasure and honour to perform Unlocked a number of times in the U.S. It is a marvellously inventive and beautiful piece that sparks dramatic and intense interest in audiences. I have played it for many audiences of folk who are quite uninitiated in the ways of contemporary music and have been blown away by the response. Accessible, elegant and brilliant piece.
