        Its a classic.
Some of the printing could be better, some semiquavers look under defined in places.

Really works for strengthening each finger & making each finger independent.
Covers all finger movements, except stretching, within the 5-note compass plus
        6-note compass at Ex. 170.
Easily memorised as most exercises consist of a half bar which is then repeated.
And students are always short of time.

All my students, aged c.12 upwards really like it & appreciate what's for. Aged 17 or so they graduate to Hanon, which can, unless you're careful, encourage tension; they find Schmitt more relaxing.
Looks daunting unless the teacher "edits" it & divides the whole book into 6 or 7 "Chapters".
I ignore the original instruction "Play each exercise 20 (!) times". Play once, at first, then gradually build up to perhaps 4 times max.

Excellent in developing finger agility in semiquaver passage playing.
Can be daunting to the Pupil if practiced as the supporting text advises i.e to repeat 10 to 20 times. It is up to the Teacher to vary the nature of the repeats.
The F.J.H Classic Editions of the same exercises has the edge as it presents differing ways of playing scales at the back of the book.

        Musicroom Reviews

I bought this book to give me finger exercises to try and progress my piano technique. The exercises work through repetitiveness which is exactly what I was looking for. I have found this book useful as an adult but I know if I was a child I would have found this book very boring and probably wouldn't have used it.

This is my favourite exercise book, despite having Czerny, Dobrovsky and others. Again because it is so simple to use but so versatile. I recommend it to all my pupils as it will last them from start to finish.
