The John W. Schaum Piano Course is a time-honoured tutor book for young beginners, to start them off with the basics, and eventually leading them to mastery. The Red Book is for beginners at around Grade 1 standard.

The John W. Schaum Piano Course is an authoritative and comprehensive tutor series for beginners of all ages. It's incredibly well-presented with colour pictures, useful information and guidance material. The aim of the book is to teach in the most natural and enjoyable way, through popular melodies. The method enables the student to progress in a logical fashion through Pre A to F. This Red Book is intended for pupils who have progressed from the Pre-A Green Book, presenting a smooth transition that introduces new concepts while reinforcing old ones.

Of all the innumerable tutor series out there, the John W. Schaum books receive some of the widest acclaim from teachers and students of all ages. Presenting all of the essential information clearly and simply, it also uses easy-to-use diagrams and pictures to help visualise often complex information. These books are the perfect blend of a challenge without being frustratingly difficult, if you already have some musical experience, or you're a teenage or adult beginner, this book will be ideal, but for younger beginners or those with absolutely no musical experience, the Pre-A Green book is probably more appropriate.

Introducing sight-reading initially, the Red Book moves through all of the fundamentals such as the C Major position, rhythm, melodies, scales, different chords, different intervals and so on. All the way through there are practical examples that help to put the theoretical ideas into a musical context, while also helping students to gain some immediate satisfaction from their learning, which is always essential.

For an effective and efficient Piano tutor course for beginners of all ages, the John W. Schaum Piano Course Red Book holds fantastic reviews from our customers and us. If you are struggling to choose between the plethora of Piano tutors out there, you can't go much wrong with this one.

Great teaching book. Suitable once a student can read treble and bass clef notes and is ready to put both hands together.
Too many finger numbers are shown encouraging students to read the numbers rather than read the music. I usually cross out these unnecessary numbers.
Has retailed at £4.99 but price suddenly increased to £6.25 which I feel is rather a large price increase for the same item.

This is a great book. As a teacher I have used this book for years. Ideal for pupils who have learnt treble and bass clef notes and are ready to begin playing both hands together. This book will prepare them to be ready to start working towards the Grade 1 exam.

This is a very good follow on from the Pre-A book, with each piece focusing on a specific aspect of the music, introducing new things throughout. Don't be confused by the title of the book, as one would assume 'A' implies the start of a course, it is the second book.

This arrived in very quick time. An ideal tutor book for age 7+ (you need to start with the green pre A one for a younger person or someone who needs to take things a little slower. I would definitely recommend this book for adults or children.

I was also taught with these books and still find them fantastic and one of the best after students have learnt the basics. I do think though that they're no longer completely accurate for the grades they say. You may find students will finish the blue book and still need a bit more before studying for Grade 2 (as an example). There is still no doubt that this series is by far one of the better ones.

I am a piano teacher and I use this book with many students. It is one of my favourites because of its easy-to-learn pieces. There are lovely colour illustrations throughout the book which are just enough to be pleasing without deterring from the notation. I would recommend this music book to any early grade 1 student, or a more advanced student for pure pleasure playing.

I love these books for the young beginners. Both my sister and I were taught using these books and now I am using them to teach my students too! They are easy to follow and cover all the fundamentals needed for Grade 1 in a fun and logical way!

I love this series of piano instruction for beginner children. My piano teacher used the books when I was learning and now I use the same for my piano student and she loves the songs!

I don`t use this book as much as others, but I have used it for all age pupils to get them ready for step two LCM piano exams and it works! It encourages them to sing along which is obviously very good for aural training.
