Pavane was composed in memory of the actress Gladys Cooper for her memorial service at St. Paul’s Covent Garden, London, in November 1971. It was commissioned by her son-in-law, actor Robert Hardy, to enable those present to spend a few minutes in quiet contemplation of her life.

Pavane is also known in the composer's arrangement for Flute, Cello and Piano, and additionally, having been commissioned while Lewis and Hardy were working together on a television play in Norwich, forms a movement of Lewis’s 'Norfolk Concerto for Flute, Harp and Strings'.
